The History of the Wedding Song
In the 16th century, wedding songs played an integral part of the wedding ceremony. The tradition was for the bride to be led down the alter by her father accompanied by the wedding songs of their choice usually something soft and relatively slow. After the vows had been taken, she then walked back down the aisle with her new husband accompanied by a much more upbeat tune signifying the happiness of the occasion.
So what wedding songs should you choose? This can be a difficult task as there are thousands of songs to choose from. Are you having a traditional or a contemporary wedding? The type of wedding you are having and your personality, will probably dictate the type of music that you will have.
The wedding songs that you will choose will affect the mood of the ceremony and reception. Therefore you'll need some careful consideration. If you're having a traditional wedding then maybe you will elect to have the more traditional types of wedding songs, (i.e. Wedding March by Mendelssohn or the ever popular Bridal Chorus by Wagner, better known as "Here Comes the Bride"). Perhaps you're having a traditional wedding but do not want to commit to the traditional wedding songs.
After you have chosen the song you wish to be played while walking down the isle, you'll need to select the songs that you would like to be played at your wedding reception.
The First Dance is always important, as this is the event where the newly married couple dance together in front of all of their guests.
